Critical Evaluation:
Many of the songs are in Spanish or are in Spanish and English.  Track 15, Waka Waka, was particularly popular around the time of the World Cup 2010 matches.  Shakiras music has the ability to cross linguistic and cultural barriers and she uses a number of genres with which to express herself.  Unfortunately, my Spanish is not good enough to catch all the nuances and I had to look at the lyrics while listening to the songs to get a good idea of what they were about.  The classic theme of love is the subject of many of her songs and they go from very fast in pace to slow and mellow.  Most of the music on this CD is great for dancing and those teens who like to dance will find a number of good tracks.  Shakira is already wildly popular all over the world and when one listens to this, her most recent album, it is easy to see why.
Listener’s Annotation:
Hot dance melodies and lyrics in English and Spanish from international superstar Shakira.
Information about the artist:
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a Colombian musician of Spanish, Italian, and Lebanese heritage.  She was born in 1977 in Barranquilla, Columbia and moved to Los Angeles when she was 8, but returned to Columbia.  She started her music career in the early 90’s in Latin America and here fame has grown since.  She is now regarded as one of the top international superstars currently recording and performing.  Like K’naan, one of her songs, Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) was one of the official songs of World Cup 2010.
Shakira is actively involved in charities in her native Colombia and in other nations and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.  She is engaged and currently lives in the Bahamas when not on tour.  It is rumored that Shakira has a rather high IQ and can speak English and Portuguese fluently in addition to her native Spanish.
